Dylan in the 70's

I once claimed (I think on this page, if not somewhere else on the internet) that the 70's were the best decade for rock'n'roll, or even the best for pop music, or maybe better said I find that some of the most interesting records I own are from the 70's. That's to preface the fact that these days I'm almost exclusively listening and pursuing are records from the 70's. In particular Roxy Music, 70's Lou Reed, 70's John Cale, 70's Iggy Pop, and yes 70's Bob Dylan.

I guess write now, especially about Dylan, is how wierd it is. Why is his face painted white? Why is Mick Ronson part of the Rolling Thunder Revue? I'm sure there are people with perfectly constructed arguements about why Dylan was doing this and what it all means, but the fact of the matter is that Renaldo and Clara was a 4 hour movie that everybody wanted to see but no one liked what they saw. The success, both culturally and artistically and politically and commercially, of the 60's was not only a surprise to the squares, but also to the rock musicians who rode it on the top. They didn't know why suddenly Bob Dylan was selling millions of records. They were also under the gun to keep it up. And all that unknown bought them a lot of FREEDOM.

So they make some weird shit that some people dig, but given the time, most people don't remember and it's all washed over the boards w/ the ultimate art rock success of punk.

More on this later.
